This is the Sage Barista Express in Brushed Stainless Steel, also available in Black Truffle. Going from whole coffee to espresso in the cup takes about a minute on this machine. You grind right before brewing with the built-in grinder and its conical burrs, which doses the right amount straight into the portafilter. The dial sets your grind size across sixteen settings, and you decide the dose automatically or by hand. The digital temperature control (PID) keeps the water at the right temperature, so your espresso tastes the same every time. You tamp the coffee yourself and froth the milk yourself with the steam wand. That way you learn step by step what each setting does to your coffee.

The Barista Express is the entry model that leaves everything in your hands. Grinding, dosing, tamping and milk frothing sit in one machine, without a separate grinder next to it. The grinder doses straight into the portafilter, but you decide how much and how fine. The pressure gauge on the front shows you where your pressure lands while you brew, which tells you whether your grind size and dose are right. The digital temperature control keeps the water at the right temperature, so the full flavour of your espresso comes through.
With sixteen grind settings you dial the grind size in to your coffee. If the extraction runs too fast, grind a bit finer. If it runs too slow, grind coarser. The pressure gauge moves along with the extraction, so you'll see what your adjustment does instead of guessing at it.
You tamp the coffee yourself with the tamper. Tamping is the part that takes the most practice, which is exactly why you learn quickly here: you feel and see straight away what an even puck does to your shot.

The powerful steam wand gives you silky microfoam for a cappuccino, flat white or other milk drink, which is what latte art asks for. You steer the steam yourself, so you hear and see what happens in the jug. That is the fastest way to learn where to stop.
After your purchase, you get a discount code for a coffee subscription. Sign up. Fresh coffee lands on your doormat every week or month. Check out our coffee beans and coffee subscriptions.

Both are complete machines with a built-in grinder. Dosing, tamping and milk frothing happen manually on both machines. The Barista Pro reaches temperature in three seconds thanks to ThermoJet, has thirty grind settings instead of sixteen, an LCD screen and a larger drip tray with more room to work on. The Barista Express works with buttons and an analogue pressure gauge. It's the affordable choice.

Yes, with conical burrs and sixteen grind settings. The grinder doses straight into the portafilter, automatically or by hand, so you grind fresh for every shot. You don't need a separate grinder.
The Barista Express uses a Thermocoil heating system, so it needs a moment before you can brew. If you'd rather not wait at all, the Barista Pro reaches brewing temperature in three seconds with ThermoJet.
No. You steer the steam wand yourself and froth the milk by hand, which gives you the freedom to learn latte art. If you'd rather have the milk frothed automatically, look at the Barista Touch Impress or the Oracle models.
Yes. The digital temperature control (PID) keeps the water at the right temperature while you brew. That is what you need to make the same coffee taste the same every time.
Fresh, whole beans give the best result, because you grind them right before brewing. Buy coffee with the roast date printed on the bag. Use it within eight weeks of that date for the best flavour and the most stable extraction. In our roastery, we roast three days a week to ensure your coffee always arrives as fresh as possible.
Clean the machine regularly and descale it on time, especially in hard water areas. Use filtered water or replace the water filter every three months to limit limescale. You can come to us for advice on this.
