This coffee comes from Aquiares Estate in Turrialba, Costa Rica, managed by Diego Robelo. Aquiares, meaning "land between rivers", is the largest coffee farm in Costa Rica and home to a community of around 1,800 people.
Founded in 1890, the farm became what it is today under Alfonso Robelo, who transformed it into a model of sustainable agriculture and community-driven coffee production. Today, Diego continues this vision by focusing on specialty coffee, innovative processing, and unique varieties.
Set on the fertile slopes of the Turrialba volcano, the farm benefits from rich volcanic soil, abundant rainfall, and lush natural surroundings. Aquiares is also one of the few carbon neutral farms in Costa Rica, with a strong focus on biodiversity, agroforestry, and environmental research.
This lot consists of Esperanza, a rare and unique F1 hybrid. The combination of altitude, volcanic soil, and careful agronomy creates ideal conditions for slow cherry development and a complex cup.
For this African washed process, the coffee is mechanically washed after harvest and dried slowly on raised beds in solar dryers for 18 to 24 days. This extended and controlled drying process helps preserve sweetness, clarity, and the delicate structure of the variety.
Esperanza is a rare F1 hybrid created by crossing Sarchimor T-5296 with a wild Ethiopian selection known as ET25. It is propagated through a cloning technique called somatic embryogenesis, making it one of the more exclusive varieties in the specialty world.
This hybrid combines strong disease resistance and high productivity with an elegant and complex cup profile. Aquiares is one of the few farms globally producing Esperanza at commercial scale.
Expect a clean and elegant cup with floral aromatics, layered fruit sweetness, and vibrant acidity. The profile is refined and expressive, with excellent clarity, silky texture, and a long, delicate finish.
