Just before you tamp, the eight 0.4mm needles pass through the ground coffee in your basket. They pull clumps apart and settle the dose evenly, so the water then flows through the puck just as easily everywhere. That is where the gain lies: an even bed means less channelling and a more even extraction, and so a clean, sweeter shot instead of the sharp edges you get when the water carves its own path.

The 2.0 has an adjustable head. Turn it and you change the width and spread of the needles, so you can match them to your basket. After use you park the tool on the magnetic stand that comes with it, which keeps the needles straight and protects them from bending. Six spare needles are included, so you can swap a bent needle without fuss.

The body is SUS304 stainless steel and aluminium alloy and stands up to daily use. WDT sounds technical, but it is one of the cheapest steps with the most impact on your espresso: good distribution often does more than a pricier upgrade. Mind the needles: they are fine and sharp, so keep the tool away from children.
